BP officials told federal regulators today that the four-month battle against the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico unleashed major technological innovations in everything from unmanned submarines to drilling relief wells — advancements that could help combat future offshore disasters.
Even the failures were informative, BP said, in a 46-page report it delivered to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement. From the containment dome to the top hat, BP’s repeated attempts to capture the oil flowing out of the Macondo well demonstrated what worked and what didn’t.
“The result has been a series of developments, ranging from incremental enhancements to step changes in technologies and techniques,” BP said in its report. They “have advanced the state of the art and laid the foundation for future refinements as part of an enhanced regime for any type of source-to-shore response.
